The DS28E38 features Maxim's ChipDNA Physically Unclonable Function (PUF) technology, making it immune to invasive attacks because the ChipDNA-based root encryption key is not stored in memory or any other static state. Instead, Maxim's PUF circuit relies on the random analog characteristics produced by the underlying MOSFET semiconductor devices to generate cryptographic keys. When necessary, the circuit generates a unique key per device, which disappears instantly when the device is no longer in use. If the DS28E38 were subjected to an invasive physical attack, the attack would alter the ds28e38 pr wcircuit's sensitive electrical characteristics, further preventing a security breach. In addition to these protective benefits, ChipDNA technology simplifies or eliminates the need for complex secure IC key management, as the key can be used directly for cryptographic operations. The ChipDNA circuit has also demonstrated high reliability under process variations, voltage, temperature, and aging. Furthermore, to address cryptographic quality, the PUF output evaluation for the NIST-based randomness test suite was successful. By using the DS28E38, engineers can build a hacking defense into their designs from the outset. The IC is low-cost and easy to integrate into designs via Maxim's single-contact 1-Wire® interface, combined with a low-complexity fixed-function command set that includes cryptographic operations.

Key advantages
include a ChipDNA-protected cryptographic toolset, including an asymmetric hardware engine (ECC-P256), a random number generator (TRNG), a read-authenticated decrement-only counter, 2KB of electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM), and a unique 64-bit ROM ID number.

- Easy to implement and cost-effective: single-touch operation with 1-Wire, no device-level firmware development, simplified key management, and free host system software tools

• Highly reliable: PUP key error rate (KER) of 5ppb achieved with varying temperature, time, and voltage.
