The main difference of the MLX90384 lies in its magnet design and sensing capabilities. Unlike traditional multi-pole magnetic sensors, the MLX90384 is pitch-independent and does not require a precise match between the magnet's pole size and the sensor. This allows the use of magnets with larger, stronger magnetic poles, providing more powerful signals that enable operation with large gaps. At the same time, the same sensor can be used with magnets of different sizes. Arcminaxis™ technology offers up to 18-bit resolution, a generous magnet-sensor placement tolerance of ±0.5 mm, and a substantial 1.5 mm (nominal) airgap between the magnet and the integrated circuit (IC).
For robotic designs, the functionality of the MLX90384 helps reduce sensor and magnet costs compared to existing multipolar solutions, while also simplifying design and assembly considerations thanks to increased mounting tolerances and robustness against mechanical wear. The MLX90384 is supplied in a TSSOP-16 package along with a magnet and software package for operating and calibrating the system. Melexis Arcminaxis™ also enhances design flexibility by providing support for off-axis, through-axis, and linear encoder applications.
The MLX90384 solution, which includes the IC, magnet, and algorithm required for its operation, is ready for testing. Additionally, a ready-to-use evaluation kit is also available, featuring a pre-assembled and pre-calibrated design with a pre-programmed microcontroller.
