Covering a spectrum from smartphones to data centers, Silvermont represents a foundation for creating a whole range of innovative products, which will begin to be marketed throughout the year. Furthermore, this new microarchitecture will be produced using the company's cutting-edge 22nm SoC manufacturing process, which employs three-dimensional Tri-Gate transistors and delivers significant improvements in performance and energy efficiency.
Intel's Silvermont microarchitecture was designed and co-optimized using the company's 22nm SoC manufacturing process, featuring revolutionary Tri-Gate three-dimensional transistors. By leveraging the advantages of this cutting-edge technology, Intel is able to deliver significant improvements in performance and energy efficiency.
These are other highlights of the Silvermont microarchitecture:
• A new out-of-order execution engine enables best-in-class single-process execution performance.1
• A new multi-core architecture and new interconnect architectures allow the architecture to scale to up to 8 cores, delivering increased performance with higher bandwidth, lower latency, and more efficient out-of-order execution, resulting in more balanced and agile systems.
• New UA instructions and technologies offer improved performance and more powerful virtualization and security management capabilities, opening the door to a wide range of products. These instructions extend existing 64-bit instructions and the existing IA instruction base.
• Its new and improved power management features include a new technology for peak workloads (Intel® Burst Technology 2.0), new low-power C-states, and a wider dynamic operating range, leveraging the advantages of Intel's 3D transistors. Intel® Burst Technology 2.0's compatibility with both multi-core and single-core configurations delivers high responsiveness and is perfectly scalable for greater energy efficiency.
Architectures for a Broad Computing Spectrum:
Silvermont will be the foundation for creating a wide range of products based on the 22nm manufacturing process, which are expected to be released this year. The efficiency improvements achieved in terms of performance per watt with this new microarchitecture will allow for significantly higher performance and responsiveness in devices built around these products.
Intel's quad-core "Bay Trail" SoC will be released during the 2013 holiday season and will offer twice the performance of the company's current generation of tablet solutions. As a result of Silvermont's flexibility, Intel will offer "Bay Trail" platform variants for entry-level laptops and desktops in innovative form factors.
Intel's "Merrifield" platform will begin shipping to customers by the end of 2013. Compared to current-generation products, this platform will deliver higher performance and longer battery life, enabling personalized and context-aware services, ultrafast connections for network streaming, and enhanced protection for privacy, data, and the devices themselves.
Intel's "Avoton" platform will deliver unmatched energy efficiency and performance per watt in the microserver, storage, and scale-out workload sectors. "Avoton" is the second-generation Intel® Atom™ SoC, offering the full server capabilities customers require, including 64-bit execution, integrated interconnect, code bug correction, Intel virtualization technologies, and full software compatibility. "Rangeley" is designed for use in network and telecommunications infrastructure, specifically for entry-level and midrange routers, switches, and security appliances. The marketing of both products is planned for the second half of the year.
At the same time, Intel continues to deliver cutting-edge advancements with Haswell, the microarchitecture of the next generation of Intel® Core™ processors. This architecture will offer PC-level performance at lower power consumption levels, paving the way for innovative new 2-in-1 form factors and other mobile devices. Furthermore, Intel plans to refresh its Intel® Xeon® processor families for data centers with the new 22nm manufacturing process, offering improved efficiency and new features.
