On the path to becoming an electronics engineer, there are a handful of legacy silicon devices that we've all come across. If you were building some kind of timing circuit or astable multivibrator, the NE555 would have been the device of choice. Need to amplify a signal or compare voltages? Then the µA741 op-amp would have been grabbed from the nearest component drawer. And, for prototyping, what better choice than a 5V 7805 regulator to power it all!

Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) have been prevalent in the semiconductor industry for the past two decades and have increased substantially in the last seven years, creating significant consolidation within the sector. These mergers and consolidations are major multi-billion dollar deals that are shaping the future of the semiconductor industry, and it's easy to see why: in 2021, semiconductor sales are expected to reach $527.2 billion globally, according to Statista.

With the world's population growing and becoming increasingly reliant on electronic devices, annual electricity consumption worldwide remains unacceptably high. This is placing immense pressure on available energy resources (particularly the nearly depleted oil reserves) and is also having a serious impact on the environment (through greenhouse gas emissions, etc.).

The demand for silicon carbide (SiC) technology, which maximizes the efficiency of today's power systems while reducing their size, weight, and cost, continues to grow. But SiC solutions are not direct replacements for silicon, and not all are created equal. To realize the promise of SiC technology, developers must carefully evaluate product and supplier options based on quality, availability, and support, and understand how to optimize the integration of these disruptive SiC power components into their end systems.
