As vehicle electrification proliferates in the consumer electric vehicle segment, other forms of transportation are also following this global macro-trend, including railways, airplanes, delivery trucks, and off-road vehicles, among others. All forms of electric vehicles share two electrification systems: the traction power unit (TPU), which provides the vehicle's propulsion, and the auxiliary power unit (APU), which supplies power for all other onboard loads, from lighting and doors to air conditioning and power outlets.

The electronics industry needed only a decade to establish silicon as its primary substrate after the initial development of the transistor, thus paving the way for the development of the integrated circuit. While its properties are not ideal for all applications, its availability, ease of processing, and performance were enough to make silicon (as a material) the foundation of an industry whose annual sales approach half a trillion dollars.
