The highly integrated InnoSwitch ICs reduce the number of components required to implement a power supply by up to 50 percent, saving significant circuit board space, improving system reliability, and mitigating component supply issues. Devices in the award-winning InnoSwitch family are now available with a selection of silicon, gallium nitride (GaN), and high-voltage SiC transistors, enabling designers to optimize their power solution for a wide range of consumer, computing, communications, industrial, and automotive applications.

Peter Vaughan, director of automotive business development at Power Integrations, states: “800-volt batteries are becoming standard for electric vehicles. Many vehicle systems are connected to this powerful power source, but the delicate electronic control circuits only need a few volts to operate and communicate. InnoSwitch devices allow electronic components to safely draw power from the available main bus, using minimal board space and without wasting energy. Most exciting is the opportunity to dramatically simplify emergency power to the main traction inverter, which can be called upon to operate from any voltage between 30 and 1000 volts. Our SiC-based InnoSwitch3-AQ devices manage this wide range with incredible ease.”

Offered in a compact InSOP™-24D package, the new ICs utilize a FluxLink™ feedback link, providing reinforced isolation up to 5000 VRMS for secondary-side control. FluxLink technology enables direct detection of the output voltage, providing advantages such as precise regulation and extremely fast transient response. The circuit starts up from 30 volts without the need for external circuitry, which is critical for functional safety. Other protection features include input undervoltage, output overvoltage, and overcurrent limiting.

The inclusion of synchronous rectification and a quasi-resonant (QR)/CCM flyback controller achieves efficiency exceeding 90%, easily meeting the most stringent OEM requirements. These new components consume less than 15 mW under no-load conditions, making them ideal for reducing self-discharge in battery management systems.

The 1700-volt InnoSwitch3-AQ components are also well-suited for industrial markets, where the integrated solution replaces discrete controller plus MOSFET designs, saving space, time, and costs while increasing reliability in applications such as renewables, industrial motor drives, battery storage, and metering.
