This new series offers ultra-low leakage current (IR) characteristics to achieve a high non-disruptive voltage of 200V. Replacing fast recovery diodes (FRDs) and rectifier diodes, typically used in vehicle systems, with ROHM's new Schottky diodes (SBDs) significantly improves forward voltage (VF) characteristics (11% lower than conventional FRDs). This reduces power losses in applications and allows for smaller package designs by reducing heat generation, contributing to greater space savings.
(Fig. 1)
In recent years, the technological trend in soft drive systems for 48V hybrids has been mechanical integration, where the motor and peripheral circuits are combined into a single module. This demands high efficiency and high-voltage SBDs capable of stable operation at high temperatures. At the same time, high-voltage SBDs are required in systems using conventional 150V components to increase functionality and reliability.
ROHM offers the RBxx8 range of ultra-low IR SBDs that withstand up to 150V, compatible with high-temperature automotive environments. This latest series adds 200V models to meet the evolving needs of the automotive sector. ROHM will continue to enhance its product range, contributing to lower energy consumption and greater space savings in a wide range of industrial and automotive applications.

Key features
: The trend is for higher-efficiency SBDs to replace conventional rectifier diodes and FRDs in automotive power supplies exposed to high temperatures. However, one drawback of SBDs is the degradation of their IR characteristics at higher operating temperatures, which can lead to thermal runaway. This necessitates products that provide stable operation at higher temperatures.
(Fig. 4)
The RBxx8 series utilizes a high-temperature optimized metal barrier that significantly improves IR characteristics (perhaps the most significant challenge when using SBDs in automotive power supplies). This ensures safe operation at high temperatures in automotive and industrial applications, eliminating the possibility of thermal runaway.
1. Replacing FRDs reduces energy consumption in applications.
Ultra-low IR allows ROHM to achieve a high non-disruptive voltage of 200V. This enables the replacement of 200V FRDs used in automotive systems with high-efficiency SBDs. Therefore, the RBxx8BM/NS200 series reduces VF characteristics by 11% compared to conventional FRDs, contributing to reduced power losses in applications.
2. Low heat generation reduces package size, contributing to greater space savings in a wide range of applications.
The reduced VF minimizes heat generation and allows users to adopt a smaller package size compared to conventional solutions. ROHM is currently developing medium-power packages, with plans to reduce the mounting area by up to 71% by replacing the 5.9mm × 6.9mm FRDs with compact 2.5mm × 4.7mm products.
