These integrated digital power monitors offer digital current, voltage, and energy monitoring using an integrated 12-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) that communicates via a compliant I2C-PMBus interface.
Both the ADM1293 and ADM1294, available from Mouser Electronics, use an external sense resistor to determine current by measuring voltage differences. The internal 12-bit ADC amplifies and digitizes the voltage and can also simultaneously sample the main and auxiliary input voltages. The internal digital block multiplies the primary current and voltage to calculate power, and the devices have an energy accumulator for measuring energy. A standard PMBus interface allows a master controller to read the data back from the device. The master controller combines this information with a known sense resistor value to calculate current, voltage, power, and energy consumption over time on the monitored rail.
The ADM1293 and ADM1294 monitors are rated to operate from -40°C to 125°C. The ADM1293 is designed for high-side supply monitoring (0V to 20V), and the ADM1294 is designed for low-power side monitoring (-48V to 0V, with integrated shunt regulator).
