With the goal of optimizing and simplifying the development of systems for the ultrawide displays often seen in electric vehicles, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), and high-end vehicles, Microchip Technology Inc. has announced its maXTouch® MXT2912TD-UW touchscreen controller. This is the first automotive-certified single-chip solution on the market for ultrawide displays up to 45 inches and is compatible with both LCD and OLED technologies.

The MXT2912TD-UW reduces the number of touch controllers on the vehicle's user interface display. This single-chip controller provides the highest refresh rate for widescreen displays, regardless of screen resolution, helping to match the user experience to that of a smartphone. Another key feature is the exceptional signal-to-noise ratio inherent in the maXTouch family, enabling the MXT2912TD-UW to detect and track multiple finger contacts through thick gloves and across various materials and thicknesses, even in the presence of moisture.

The MXT2912TD-UW complies with the ISO 26262 specification for functional safety in vehicles, incorporating several safety-related functions that simplify the certification of the display module's functional safety system. These functions include automatic and periodic tests, touch sensor tests, internal flash and RAM tests, integrity checks of the entire signal data path, and other microprocessor core tests. The embedded firmware development is based on Automotive SPICE® processes.

“The automotive industry is driving new innovations in interior design, such as integrating stylish concepts into the user interface.
Microchip is facilitating the development of these revolutionary designs with our new touch controller, designed for ultrawide displays thanks to our exclusive, patented technology,” said Fanie Duvenhage, vice president of Microchip’s user interface business unit.

“Our single-chip solution offers display manufacturers and suppliers simple and familiar touch solutions for user interfaces in modern vehicles, reducing cost, risk and time to market.”.

To support its touchscreen controllers, Microchip also supplies complementary devices such as LDO (low-dropout regulators), 8, 16 and 32 bit microcontrollers, CAN (controller area network) controllers and CAN physical layer controllers, among others.

Development Tools
: Regarding software, it is compatible with Microchip's maXTouch Studio development tool and the maXTouch Analyzer inspection tool for production line verification. In addition, Microchip's application and support centers worldwide provide customer assistance for ultra-wide designs, including sensor simulation, development, and integration, as well as system tuning. Development hardware and technical support are available upon request.
