The MLX91219 is a conventional Hall effect current sensor. Using a ferromagnetic core, it measures currents from 200A to over 2000A. The MLX91218 is an IMC-Hall® current sensor. With flexible U-shielding for crosstalk immunity, it measures currents from 200A to 2000A. Both sensors benefit from a significantly higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), nearly twice that of previous generations. With high linearity, within ±0.3% of full scale, these AEC-Q100 automotive-grade sensors offer enhanced accuracy for managing high-speed applications such as motor control, inverters, and converters, as well as redundant monitoring of battery management systems (BMS). Minimal thermal drift, which keeps electrical displacement within +/-5mV and sensitivity within +/-1%, ensures accuracy over a wide temperature range.
With the option of an operating voltage of 3.3V or 5V, designers can use these sensors directly in circuits containing new low-voltage 3.3V microcontrollers or with legacy 5V devices.
The MLX91218 and MLX91219 sensors integrate overcurrent detection (OCD) circuitry, typically implemented off-chip using an external window comparator. This further simplifies system design, saves board space, and reduces the bill of materials. The overcurrent limit is set internally during initial product configuration. Future SOIC8-encapsulated products feature an additional pin that allows for more precise adjustment of the threshold voltage using an external voltage divider. Two indicator pins display the overcurrent status relative to the internal and external limits, with response times of 2 µs and 10 µs, respectively.
Both types of sensors provide a selectable analog output, allowing you to choose between a fixed output or a ratiometric output that scales with the supply voltage. With a bandwidth of 400 kHz and a fast response time, they are suitable for circuits designed to operate at high switching speeds and fundamental frequencies to minimize phase delay in the control loop. Furthermore, the upcoming MLX91218 incorporates Melexis' patented Integrated Magnetic Concentrator (IMC) to optimize the magnetic field shape, enabling compact and lightweight shielding.
The MLX91219 is available in a single-line 4-pin (SIP) package.
