The MAX38889 boasts a peak efficiency of 94 percent, 9 percent higher than the closest competitor's solution, enabling it to support longer backup times. Furthermore, at one-third the size, it allows for easier integration into space-constrained designs.
In applications such as smart utility meters or car dashcams, the MAX38889 DC regulator operates in buck mode to charge a backup power source, such as a supercapacitor. When the main power supply is interrupted, the regulator automatically reverses direction, boosting the supercapacitor's voltage to power the system until the main power is restored.
To facilitate adoption, the entire MAX38889 solution is 64 percent smaller than its closest competitor (218 mm² vs. 606 mm²), enabling designers to reduce the number of components, cut down board space, and save on bill of materials costs. Its smaller size also makes it easier to integrate into new and existing designs with space constraints. The MAX38889 regulates standby power for a wide range of portable and non-portable applications, including price scanners and surveillance cameras in retail, as well as applications in homes, construction, automotive, industrial automation, and healthcare IoT.
