Silvestro Fimiani, product marketing manager at Power Integrations, states: "These new LinkSwitch-TN2 ICs are pin-compatible with previous generations, making it easy for customers to upgrade to higher-power designs. A high-current buck converter can be created using a minimal number of readily available components and saving at least one diode compared to previous solutions."

The LNK3207 AC-DC converter's integrated circuits increase available current by 60%, while offering efficiency exceeding 80% and no-load power consumption below 30 mW. Each LinkSwitch-TN2 monolithic IC incorporates a 725 V power MOSFET, an oscillator, on/off control for high efficiency under light load, a high-voltage switched current source for jitter self-damping, fast current capping (cycle-to-cycle), hysteretic thermal shutdown, and input and output overvoltage protection circuitry.

The new LinkSwitch-TN2 ICs are designed for mass-market appliances such as washing machines, dryers, and coffee makers, which benefit from their simple design. They are also suitable for low-power sensor-based devices such as home security cameras and smart thermostats, as well as for metering and IoT installations. The devices are available in three packages—PDIP-8C, SMD-8C, and SO-8C—for greater design flexibility. The SMD-8C package is ideal for high ambient temperature applications (85/105 °C).

The LNK3207 AC-DC converter ICs are priced at $0.60 in volume quantities. A new reference design, the RDR-912, describes a 6.6 W non-isolated buck converter with an 85 VAC - 265 VAC input and a 12 V, 550 mA output, built using the fewest possible components.
