The module is ideal for high-power applications powered by multi-cell batteries or rectifiers commonly used in the ICT industry, and employing intermediate bus conversion (IBC) or dynamic bus voltage (DBV) architectures.
The BMR458 represents the cutting edge of advanced bus converter technology and comes with a host of features. These include the highest power output (650W) in the industry for a quarter-brick advanced bus converter, thus reducing the number of modules required in very high-power applications; and high-precision current distribution, as it is the only advanced bus converter currently available to offer active or leakage current distribution. Other key features include dynamic load compensation, snapshot parameter capture, and a PMBus v1.3 interface.
“This is a significant product introduction by Ericsson and further reinforces its position as a leader in supplying the world’s most advanced power modules, while also meeting the industry’s growing demands for higher power,” commented Martin Hägerdal, Director of Ericsson Power Modules. “The BMR458 is the highest-power advanced bus converter currently available and comes with a suite of innovative features to deliver best-in-class energy savings for today’s power system architects.”
Key electrical features of the module include its industry-leading efficiency of up to 96.6% at half load and 96.3% at full load; a peak current output of 54.2A; a tightly regulated 12V (+/- 2mV, typical) output across the 40-60V input voltage range; +/- 1A output current monitoring for highly accurate system current monitoring capabilities; and a fast transient recovery time of only 1ms. Additional specifications include an MTBF of 8.2 million hours; and 2250Vdc I/O functional isolation, meeting the latest IEC/EN/UL60905 safety standard.
The module's dynamic bus voltage capability is crucial for advanced power systems, allowing the module's output voltage to be adjusted to match the load, thus maximizing overall system efficiency and reducing energy consumption. The module also provides high-precision current distribution with both active and leakage current options, enabling the paralleling of up to six modules, offering increased reliability and greater available power.
The BMR458's Dynamic Load Compensation (DLC) feature adjusts the control loop to accommodate the capacitance load. To further assist engineers, the DLC feature can also be used in conjunction with the Ericsson Power Designer software tool, which has been implemented for the initial development and prototyping of digital power systems, via the module's PMBus interface (revision 1.3), which also enables advanced digital power monitoring and control functionality.
Other important features include: the instant parameter capture analysis tool, which stores the last known measurement; adaptive ramp time, which modifies the ramp time to suit the output capacitive load; and automatic back-current protection when modules are in parallel, simplifying the original circuitry.
Available in the industry-standard quarter-brick format with dimensions of 57.9 x 36.8 x 12.7 mm (2.28 x 1.45 x 0.5 in), the module also delivers excellent performance in extreme temperature environments. It offers greater overall reliability and provides more usable power in applications with high ambient temperatures and/or poor airflow. However, the module is also available with an optional backplate, allowing connection to a heatsink or cold plate for even the most extreme environments.
The innovative BMR458 has been built to the highest standards of design and manufacturing quality, enabling Ericsson to offer customers a consistently high level of confidence in its power modules.
* Improved performance, energy management, and end-user value are the main benefits offered by Ericsson's range of digitally controlled 3E DC/DC converters.
