The Gen5 offers unprecedented immunity to 40V peak-to-peak loader noise measured between 1 and 500 kHz with an ultra-thin 0.5 mm cover lens and a finger size of up to 22 mm. These are the most demanding specifications ever used to measure any touchscreen controller. No competing controller provides noise immunity above 15Vpp under such conditions.
The Gen5 controller design incorporates a new analog input stage that drives the touchscreen at 10V and high frequency with a single-pass narrowband sweep and advanced hardware DSP filtering. The Gen5's unparalleled noise immunity allows next-generation terminal designers to implement ultra-thin stacks and displays integrated directly into the display itself, including in-cell, on-cell, and direct lamination structures in a high-noise display. As a result, the final products will be thinner and more streamlined, with no loss of touch sensitivity or false touches, and with minimal jitter (less than 0.5 mm). Cypress has incorporated many other TrueTouch innovations into the Gen5 family. Thanks to Cypress's unique and patented ability to provide self-capacitance and mutual-capacitance sensing on the same chip, the Gen5 offers industry-leading water resistance for excellent performance in real-world conditions, including rain, condensation, and perspiration. Combining this powerful architecture with an ARM M-Core processor known for its high MIPS/mW efficiency, the Gen5 boasts a 120Hz refresh rate and a deep sleep mode that consumes only 4.5 uW. The new devices now offer up to 36 capacitive I/O points for ideal sensor density on displays up to 5 inches and support for CapSense® touch-sensing buttons.
Cypress's touch sensing portfolio includes TrueTouch®, CapSense®, and TrackPad solutions. The company's intellectual property (IP) portfolio features true single-layer sensor solutions that reduce touchscreen costs, as well as on-chip self-capacity and mutual-capacity sensing that delivers advanced features such as water resistance, proximity sensing, 1 mm stylus support, and near-point detection.
Samples of the Gen5 controllers are now available to the first customers. Cypress plans to supply mass production to the first customers during the second quarter of 2013. The family will be supplied in 44-pin, 5 mm x 5 mm QFN packages with 28 sensing I/O, a 44-pin, 5 mm x 5 mm QFN package with 33 sensing I/O, and a 48-pin, 6 mm x 6 mm QFN package with 36 sensing I/O.
