HiperPFS-5 integrated circuits are ideal for high-power USB PD adapters, televisions, video game consoles, all-in-one computers, and household appliances.
Edward Ong, senior director of product marketing at Power Integrations, comments: “With OEMs and aftermarket service providers, the power factor of HiperPFS-5 is very high: “With OEMs and aftermarket suppliers competing to create the fastest, smallest, and most versatile USB PD chargers for mobile devices, the HiperPFS-5 ICs offer engineers a critical advantage. We’ve combined our proprietary PowiGaN switch with a quasi-resonant, variable-frequency, discontinuous-mode PFC topology. By combining the HiperPFS-5 ICs with our new HiperLCS™2 chipset or our InnoSwitch™4-CZ active-clamp flyback ICs, designers can easily exceed even the most stringent efficiency regulations, while cutting the bill of materials in half and achieving extremely attractive form factors for ultrafast chargers.”
The capacitors and inductors used in power supplies generate a phase shift between current and voltage, causing losses in power lines and potentially disrupting other equipment connected to the electrical grid. Many countries require power supplies over 75 W to be adjusted for this effect using power factor correction, or PFC. While many PFC solutions are available, the HiperPFS-5 ICs with PowiGaN technology and a quasi-resonant (QR) control scheme represent the pinnacle of offline power quality improvement.
The innovative Discontinuous Conduction Mode Control (DCM) technology of the HiperPFS-5 adjusts the switching frequency based on the output load, input line voltage, and input line duty cycle. QR DCM control ensures low switching losses and allows the use of a low-cost boost diode. The variable frequency motor enables a reduction in the size of the boost inductor by more than 50% compared to conventional Critical Conduction Mode (CRM) boost PFC circuits. Low switching and conduction losses—further enhanced by the PowiGaN commutator—along with lossless current sensing, result in HiperPFS-5 ICs offering high efficiency across the entire load range, with an efficiency reaching 98.3%. HiperPFS-5 ICs provide a power factor greater than 0.98 at full load. Under light loads, an innovative power factor (PFE) improvement feature compensates for the input filter capacitance, maintaining a high PF of 0.96 even at 20% load. No-load power consumption is only 38 mW.
The robust 750 V PowiGaN switch offers further advantages. In many parts of the world, the power grid can be highly unstable, often leading to power supply component failures due to power surges. HiperPFS-5 ICs maintain a high power factor up to 305 VAC and can operate continuously up to 460 VAC during line surges. Furthermore, HiperPFS-5 ICs incorporate Power Integrations' X-Capacitor Auto-Discharge (CAPZero™) feature, including the redundant pins required to meet safety regulations, and high-voltage auto-restart, all in a low-profile InSOP™-T28F power package. Exposed cooling fins on the casing are located at the source potential, providing effective cooling and simplifying the EMI solution. Digital voltage spike detection on the line ensures robust performance, even in the presence of distorted input from uninterruptible power supplies or generators.
