This eight-channel integrated circuit (IC) delivers up to 70x faster speeds, uses over 20% less power, and occupies 40% less space than existing solutions. It is controlled by an eight-bit parallel interface or via a standard serial peripheral interface (SPI), which is also used for configuration and monitoring. Multiple devices can be daisy-chained to support additional I/O points through the same SPI interface, requiring only three isolators for all channels, resulting in further savings in cost, board space, and power consumption. The serial mode includes cyclic redundancy checks (CRC) for guaranteed data integrity, as well as global and per-channel diagnostics for remote system monitoring
Maxim offers a complete reference design (MAXREFDES63#) as well as an evaluation kit with special prototyping features. The credit card-sized reference design integrates the MAX14900E, a microcontroller, isolated I/O port, power supplies, UART, and USB port to simplify incorporation of the device into the final OEM product design, as well as providing a means for rapid evaluation.
Features
• Low power; high voltage: The eight digital channels require only 3 mA (maximum) of supply current; it operates from a wide supply range of 10 V to 36 V and is therefore compatible with the 24 V rail of many factory systems.
• High speed and conductivity: With an input-to-output propagation delay of 0.3 µsec (typical) / 0.8 µsec (maximum), it can support fast switching speeds of up to 100 kHz in a push-pull configuration. The resistance, a critical factor in static power dissipation, is only 85 mΩ (typical) and 165 mΩ (maximum). It can handle current loads up to 850 mA; the outputs can be used in parallel to achieve an even higher current conduction rate.
• High integration and space saving: Housed in a small 48-pin 7 mm x 7 mm QFN package; it uses significantly less board space.
• Data Integrity: It offers per-channel and global diagnostics/monitoring via its SPI port, while users can access the I/O path through an eight-bit parallel port. The serial link includes CRC error detection to improve data link integrity.
The MAX14900E is specified for a range of -40°C to 125°C.
