The INICnet (Intelligent Network Interface Controller) network technology is a synchronous and scalable solution that significantly simplifies the development of audio and infotainment systems and offers complete implementation in vehicles that incorporate Ethernet-oriented system architectures.

The integration of mobile services, multi-domain communications, and autonomous driving applications into in-vehicle infotainment systems requires a more flexible solution for transporting packets, data streams, and control signals. Solutions implemented to date are either costly and time-consuming, or their bandwidth and packet data capabilities are too limited to support system updates and connectivity to other networks.

Because audio is a key infotainment function in vehicles, INICnet technology offers complete flexibility by supporting various digital audio formats for different sources and loads. INICnet technology also provides high-speed packet data communications and supports file transfers, over-the-air software updates, and system diagnostics via standard Ethernet frames.

Therefore, INICnet technology enables complete integration of system management and data communications over IP, as well as highly efficient data flow transport. INICnet technology does not require the development or licensing of other protocols or software stacks, thus reducing development costs, effort, and time.

INICnet technology provides a standardized solution that operates over 50 Mbps unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable and 150 Mbps coaxial cable. Thanks to its low deterministic latency, INICnet enables the development of complex audio and acoustic applications. Integrated network management supports between 2 and 50 nodes, as well as processorless or narrow modules where the node is configured and managed remotely. The Power over Data Line (PoDL) capability of this solution reduces the cost of powering microphones and other narrow modules. Nodes can be arranged in any order with consistent results, and all nodes in the system can communicate with each other.

INICnet technology is supplied with Unified Centralized Network Stack (UNICENS), free network management software. UNICENS shortens development cycles, reduces software complexity, and simplifies system verification for an INICnet-connected infotainment system. UNICENS coexists seamlessly with IP-based system management, simplifying application code by separating system management from resource management.

Other tools for INICnet technology include a network analyzer, a network configuration tool, and evaluation cards with various feature sets, all offered by K2L, a subsidiary of Microchip.

All 150 INICnet technology products are now available in quantities suitable for volume production. Samples of 50 MHz UTP cables based on INICnet technology are also available, and volume production availability is planned for 2019.
