In recent years, with the spectacular growth of the IoT and the increased energy consumption resulting from the automation of industrial equipment and household appliances, there is a growing need for reduced energy consumption to rationalize energy use and preserve limited global resources. This requires greater efficiency from IGBTs—one of the semiconductors responsible for energy conversion—as well as modules equipped with them to further reduce energy consumption.
However, when developing IPMs with IGBTs, noise characteristics often deteriorate because priority is given to low loss to reduce power consumption, making it necessary to improve noise performance.
To address this issue, ROHM has developed a new range of four IGBT-based IPM models that achieve best-in-class performance by simultaneously reducing radiated noise and power loss. Optimizing the characteristics of the integrated IGBT and the smooth recovery characteristics of the internal FRD (fast recovery diode) allows the BM6437x series to reduce radiated noise by more than 6 dB (peak-wise) compared to standard products, making it possible to simplify the noise filter that is typically required. Therefore, the latest low-loss IGBTs adopted in these IPMs reduce power consumption by 6% (fc=15 kHz) compared to conventional ROHM IPMs,
achieve best-in-class low loss, and contribute to reducing the power consumption of certain equipment. Furthermore, the new product features a significantly improved integrated temperature control function, resulting in a high accuracy of ±2% (equivalent to 2°C). This allows for the elimination of the external thermistor required with existing high-precision temperature monitors, reducing the number of external parts and the design burden. Furthermore, a new function has been added to identify the product after assembly to help prevent assembly errors. A fault identification mode has also been added. This integrated function helps distinguish the fault state by applying "short-circuit protection," "undervoltage protection," or "thermal shutdown protection."
ROHM is committed to further expanding its product range for a wide variety of applications, including products optimized for the automotive sector. These products help reduce the design burden of applications and energy consumption, while also contributing to addressing societal challenges such as environmental protection.
