The MAXM22511 simplifies and dramatically reduces the design of fieldbus communication systems for factory automation, motor control, and other industrial Internet of Things (IoT) applications.
Full industrial convergence requires intelligence at the edge of the automated factory to enable self-diagnostics and autonomous capabilities. To actively monitor and communicate the real-time health and status information required by these environments, factory subsystems demand fieldbus communication systems that meet stringent size and power performance requirements while supporting operation in noisy industrial environments. The MAXM22511, the first in a family of isolated communication integrated circuits, addresses these challenges while simplifying fieldbus communication system designs. The highly integrated module achieves this by eliminating the need for discrete digital isolators, transceivers, transformers, and transformer controllers, while also reducing bill of materials (BOM) costs.
The MAXM22511 supports data rates of up to 25 Mbps and provides 60 percent DC-DC throughput (twice as good as the competition) and ±35 kV electrostatic discharge protection (twice as good as the competition). The module is available in a 9.35 mm x 11.5 mm LGA (Land Grid Array) package, which is 35 percent smaller than competing solutions.
Key Advantages
• High Integration: The module integrates isolated data and isolated power into a small package. By eliminating the need for four discrete components, it reduces bill of materials costs and simplifies design.
• Energy Efficiency: The module's 60% DC-DC efficiency is twice that of competing solutions.
• Robust Operation: 2.5kVRMS isolation enables reliable communication across the isolation barrier to ensure the safe operation of industrial equipment. The module reduces electromagnetic interference (EMI), and its ±35kV electrostatic discharge protection (Human Body Model or HBM) is twice that of the closest competitive solution.
"Fieldbus communication system designers face difficult challenges related to downsizing solutions and improving energy efficiency," says Bassel Rahil, supplier development manager at Future Electronics. "The MAXM22511 provides a robust, isolated communications solution to meet the demands of Industry 4.0 and demonstrates Maxim's ongoing commitment to enabling industrial convergence."
"Industry 4.0 places significant demands on the underlying components of industrial equipment, from reducing form factors to increasing energy efficiency and robust operation in harsh environments," said Jeff DeAngelis, managing director of Industrial Communications at Maxim Integrated. "The MAXM22511 streamlines the design of a compact, robust, and efficient fieldbus communications path that enables the collection of real-time health and status information from the edge of the digital factory and moves it to the cloud to help optimize factory performance and reduce lost productivity."
