For many position-sensing applications, the combination of high accuracy and complete immunity to spurious fields is the holy grail. Your search is finally over.
The new Melexis MLX90513 position sensor offers ±0.1% full-scale accuracy (±0.36° in a rotary implementation with a 360° range). Furthermore, its latency of less than 20 µs, which can be reduced to zero through programming, enables the implementation of a fast control loop, ensuring superior system responsiveness. This inductive ASSP exhibits native immunity to stray electromagnetic fields (meeting ISO 11452-8 requirements). Simultaneously, the sensor's sensitivity is unaffected by thermal drift.
The configurable output allows position detection data to be supplied as analog ratiometric, PWM, SENT, or SPC signals. This means that output protocols related to numerous different application criteria can be addressed. It is the only inductive position sensor on the market with an SPC output. The option of a 0.5 µs tick time (fast SENT or SPC) is another differentiating feature that no other inductive sensor currently offers. The ability to perform pulse shaping in PWM, SENT, and SPC modes is invaluable, as it allows for the reduction of electromagnetic emissions.
The uses of the MLX90513 include:
● positioning of the accelerator/throttle/brake pedal
● positioning of the steering wheel angle
● angle positioning of valves or actuators
● linear applications with long stroke lengths (up to 30 cm).
The importance of functional safety (ISO 26262) has been taken into account, with the sensor being compatible with system integration up to ASIL D. In addition, the MLX90513 can be used together with Melexis magnetic sensors to provide system redundancy, as these devices will not interfere with each other (generating crosstalk).
The MLX90513 is supplied in a compact TSSOP-16 package. Its operating temperature range of -40°C to +160°C allows for installation in harsh environments. The three-phase coil arrangement improves linearity through harmonic filtering. The device's 32-point linearization ensures smooth angular nonlinearity errors. Overvoltage and reverse polarity protection further underscore its operational robustness. Thanks to the use of inductive measurement methods, system implementations are significantly faster and integration is simpler.
