The device operates from input voltages higher, lower, or equal to the battery's regulated float voltage. The LT8490's battery charger offers numerous selectable constant current and constant voltage (CC-CV) charging profiles, making it ideal for charging various types of lithium or lead-acid batteries, including sealed, gel, and immersion batteries. It also incorporates all necessary end-of-charge algorithms, eliminating the need for software or firmware and reducing the design's cycle time.
The LT8490 operates with a wide input voltage range of 6V to 80V and can generate a battery float output voltage from 1.3V to 80V using a single inductor with synchronous rectification and four switches. The device is capable of charging currents up to 10A, depending on the external FETs. The LT8490's MPPT circuitry allows for scanning the entire operating range of a solar panel to find the maximum power point, even in the presence of areas affected by partial shading. Once the maximum power point is found, the LT8490 operates at that point while using a dimming technique for rapid local tracking of changes in the maximum power point. This methodology allows the LT8490 to maximize the energy generated by a solar panel, even in less-than-ideal operating environments.
The LT8490 automatically compensates for temperature variations in the battery charging voltage by sensing an external thermistor on the battery. The STATUS and FAULT pins can be used to control indicator LEDs. Charging current limits can be adjusted by changing just one or two resistors, and the charging time can also be selected using the appropriate resistor divider. Other features of the device include pins for input and load current limiting, a regulated 3.3V LDO output, status pins, and a synchronizable fixed switching frequency.
The LT8490 is supplied in a low-profile (0.75mm) QFN package with 64 pins and dimensions of 7mm x 11mm. It is available in E and I versions with guaranteed operation between -40°C and 125°C.
