The MLX81118 complements Melexis' MLX81115 and MLX81113 models to address a wide range of applications. Unlike the MLX81113, which is primarily used for classic ambient lighting functions, the MLX81118 is suitable for various applications where multiple RGB LEDs need to be controlled via a LIN node within one or more modules, such as in door trim components or dashboard applications. Multi-channel support means the MLX81118 is also suitable for LIN-controlled light animations.
In addition to reducing the bill of materials and simplifying the design of multi-channel indoor and outdoor lighting systems, the MLX81118 also reduces LED power dissipation thanks to its new dual input voltage capability, which optimizes the control voltage of connected LEDs. This helps simplify thermal management and improve module reliability, while also reducing power consumption.
Integrated direct and indirect temperature monitoring allows for temperature compensation of all channels to ensure stable color points across the entire operating temperature range, from -40°C to 125°C.
Building on the proven features of Melexis' RGB LIN LED controllers, the new MLX81118 contains a complete LIN system, including a transceiver and protocol controller for connecting LED modules to the vehicle's existing LIN network. The LIN interface complies with LIN2.x and SAE J2602 standards, as well as ISO 18987, and supports automatic addressing via bus bypass.
LED control is handled by the Melexis MLX16 FX 16-bit RISC microcontroller and an on-chip memory subsystem that includes 2 KB of RAM and 32 KB of Flash memory for application and LED calibration coefficients, as well as actual EEPROM for additional customer data. The MLX81118 also meets the requirements of ISO 26262, enabling its use in systems classified as functionally safe.
"The MLX81118 enables trendsetting styles by providing the highly flexible control needed for creative effects. With outputs supporting eight RGB channels and precise color and brightness control, designers can leverage new capabilities to add customization and enhance security," said Michael Bender, LIN product line manager at Melexis. "At the same time, we've added features to increase reliability, facilitate thermal management, and maximize temperature stability, ultimately delivering superior user experiences.".
Manufactured using advanced silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology, the MLX81118 features high-voltage I/O and can operate on a supply voltage as low as 4V to deliver consistent performance when the vehicle's supply voltage fluctuates, such as during stop-start operation. Built-in protection features include 28V start protection and battery overvoltage and undervoltage detection.
To accelerate application development, a complete toolchain is available, including an evaluation board, an in-circuit emulator, and a C compiler. Essential software is also available, including a LIN driver, color mixing, a math library, and IC initialization routines. To support customers, Melexis has developed a network of engineering firms to provide custom software support for the application, if needed.
The MLX81118 is currently in the qualification phase and can be supplied with PPAP in accordance with AECQ-100. It is available in a space-saving, thermally enhanced 5 mm x 5 mm lead-free QFN32 package.
