The demo version of this solution helps vehicle manufacturers simplify visualization architectures, optimize system costs, and increase supply flexibility, as well as supporting the transition to software-defined vehicles (SDVs).
ASA Motion Link is an open standard for automotive video connectivity and SerDes (serializer-deserializer) communication defined by the Automotive SerDes Alliance (ASA), a global consortium of vehicle manufacturers, Tier 1 suppliers, and semiconductor companies. This standard, which offers secure, high-speed transmission of video and graphics across products from various technology providers, provides greater compatibility within the automotive ecosystem and offers a scalable alternative to proprietary video transmission technologies. Microchip, as a founding member of the ASA, is contributing to the automotive industry's transition from proprietary connectivity technologies to open and compatible standards. It has already demonstrated a high degree of interoperability with its camera solutions and is now extending these solutions to display connectivity.
Vehicle architectures are evolving into centralized, software-defined vehicle (SDV) computing systems. As a result, vehicle manufacturers are seeking connectivity solutions that meet performance requirements while reducing complexity, controlling costs, and facilitating the implementation of scalable architectures in vehicle electronics. In the joint demonstration version, graphics and video content generated by the vehicle's central computer is processed and transmitted via Microchip's VS7000 ASA-ML chipset using a standardized high-speed link.
Marelli is at the forefront of integrating technology into displays by enabling the configuration and optimization of the ASA ML deserializer to decode standardized video streams directly to the screen. This ensures accurate reception, synchronization, and delivery of centrally generated content, such as camera images, navigation maps, infotainment graphics, and vehicle control interfaces, all while simplifying electronic display architectures.
“The transition to SDVs is driving demand for more open, flexible, and scalable electronic architectures,” said Kelei Shen, president of Marelli Electronics. “As an integrator within the automotive ecosystem, Marelli combines best-in-class technologies from various companies to provide complete solutions for vehicle manufacturers. This collaboration demonstrates that open standards can accelerate innovation and deliver the interoperability that next-generation vehicle architectures need.”.
“Open standards are essential for accelerating innovation because they reduce reliance on proprietary technologies,” said Kevin So, vice president of Microchip’s communications business unit. “Our collaboration with Marelli demonstrates that ASA Motion Link provides automotive manufacturers with a secure, interoperable, and scalable connectivity solution that facilitates integration across the entire ecosystem.”.
Key features of the technology:
• Open interoperability enables seamless connectivity between driving systems and displays from numerous technology providers.
• Significantly greater supply flexibility thanks to open protocol specifications compatible with the entire automotive ecosystem.
• Integrated security with authentication and data link layer encryption built into the communication channel.
• Powerful data transmission with lossless communication and high immunity to electromagnetic interference.
• Scalable performance with data transmission speeds of up to 16 Gbps to meet diverse display requirements.
• Optimized efficiency thanks to Time Division Duplex (TDD) functionality and simplified Forward Error Correction (FEC), which contribute to reduced power consumption.
• Designed for increasingly Ethernet-based vehicle architectures.
This collaboration demonstrates that connectivity based on an open standard improves the performance of in-vehicle networks and electronics by enabling secure communication between centralized computer systems and displays.
It also reflects Marelli's strong commitment to adopting open standards that facilitate development, optimize system costs, and promote a more open automotive ecosystem.
