The PAC1711 and PAC1811 power monitors achieve this efficiency milestone and provide real-time alerts when consumption is excessive. They also incorporate a patent-pending alerting function that identifies long-term average value variations.
The 12-bit PAC1711 and 16-bit PAC1811 42V, single-channel monitors are supplied in 8-pin and 10-pin DVFN (Very Thin Dual Flat, No-Lead) packages, respectively, and their pinout and footprint are compatible with the well-known SOT23 (Small Outline Transistor)-8 package. This compatibility simplifies sourcing for developers, streamlines upgrades, and facilitates integration into existing systems.
“Until now, portable devices and many power-constrained applications have had to dedicate a significant amount of power to measuring their consumption,” said Keith Pazul, vice president of Microchip’s linear and mixed-signal products business unit. “Unlike many existing solutions, Microchip’s power monitors operate as standalone peripherals, eliminating the need to rely on the microcontroller for power monitoring. These monitors allow the microcontroller or main processor to remain idle until there is a significant power demand, such as the need to power an LCD screen.”.
The PAC1711 and PAC1811 power monitors can generate an alert based on the continuous calculation of voltage and current values. If a significant, user-defined variation occurs, the microcontroller will be notified to take appropriate action. The devices calculate a moving average, and any new sample can trigger an alert.
A slow sampling pin is available that can slow down power sampling every eight seconds to save energy.
A power supervisor's accumulator logger can be used to manage logistical aspects, monitor system battery aging and time to recharge, and provide short-term historical data on long-term consumption for microcontroller programming. Both current supervisors detect bus voltages between 0 and 42 V and communicate via an I2C® interface. They are well-suited as first or second options in computing, networking, AI and machine learning, and electromobility applications.
Development Tools:
The Click board™ evaluation board is compatible with MikroElektronika's mikroBUS™ standard for motherboard sockets. The Click board is used to evaluate device functions and performance. A Linux® driver is also available on the product pages, providing basic functionality and access to commonly used registers for power measurements. Microchip also supplies a standard C library for the PAC1711 and PAC1811, which includes usage examples with various Microchip microcontrollers.
Pricing and Availability:
The PAC1711 is now available and is supplied in VDFN-8 (PAC1711T-1E/3P) or VDFN-10 (PAC1711T-2E/9Q) packages. The PAC1811 is also available and is supplied in VDFN-8 (PAC1811T-1E/3P) or VDFN-10 (PAC1811T-2E/9Q) packages. The starting price is $0.58 per unit for orders of 10,000 units for the PAC1711 with VDFN-8. The evaluation board (part #PAC1711-Click) is priced at $15.00 per unit and is also available.
