Microchip presentsBy reducing the total number of system components and eliminating programming costs for serial identification, the MCP795XX RTCC family is the ideal choice for handheld, wireless, and consumer markets. Featuring 64 bytes of SRAM, 2 kbits of EEPROM, and a 128-bit Unique ID, which can be ordered blank or pre-programmed with a MAC address, additional memory devices may not be required. Applications in energy meters, manufacturing equipment, radios, GPS, and hospital instrumentation, which require precise timing across a wide temperature range, can also benefit from the extensive digital adjustment range, which can compensate for up to 22 seconds per day of crystal frequency drift. Digital adjustment improves RTCC timing accuracy, and the wide digital adjustment range provides customers with high precision over a broad temperature range. This precise timekeeping is maintained with low power consumption because the digital adjustment remains operational when the MCP795XX is powered by backup power at the VBAT input. Furthermore, these devices join the only catalog on the market that offers a battery-backed RTCC providing temporary fault logging and power recovery, as well as three types of non-volatile memory: EEPROM, SRAM, and unique identification.

The MCP795XX family can record the time and duration of power failures without additional circuitry, thanks to its built-in fail-safe time-logging function, which no other SPI RTCC on the market offers. Applications where extended battery life is particularly valuable, such as wireless and portable communications, security, and automotive, can also take advantage of the 5 MHz SPI bus and millisecond alarm. This high-resolution alarm output provides greater control over the duty cycle required to support longer sleep and power-off modes in the microcontroller.

The MCP795XX SPI RTCC PICtail™ Plus Daughter Board (AC164147) is now available. This board is compatible with Microchip's Explorer 16 Development Board (DM240001) and PIC18 Explorer Board (DM183032), enabling engineers to demonstrate MCP795XX and WXX RTCC devices in their applications.

The six components of the MCP795XX family (MCP79510, MCP79511, MCP79512, MCP79520, MCP79521 and MCP79522) are supplied in 10-pin MSOP and TDFN packages, and are now available as samples.
