This simplifies the design and manufacture of the smoke detector, while reducing the number of components and the cost. Furthermore, the IC's low typical operating current of 8 µA allows it to operate for up to 10 years on a single lithium battery. Two alkaline batteries can also be used to power the RE46C190. Programmable calibration and selectable operating modes provide designers with a simple way to control the detector's operation, enabling the use of a single IC to design smoke detectors for different markets and regulatory requirements. Electronic programmability also eliminates the need for some external components, further reducing manufacturing and inventory costs.

The addition of the new low-voltage smoke detector IC expands Microchip's powerful line of PIC® microcontrollers, speaker drivers, smoke detector ICs, and signal chain and power management devices, targeting a wide variety of smoke detection applications, from simple detectors in the residential segment to programmable commercial systems.
The RE46C190 smoke detector IC is available in a 16-pin SOIC 150 mil package.
