While the use of brushless DC motors has become increasingly widespread, DC motors remain more economical in numerous and varied applications, especially where the motor does not operate continuously. In the automotive environment, this includes power window and sunroof opening/closing mechanisms, as well as seat adjustment systems and air conditioning fans. In non-automotive applications, DC motors are frequently found in self-opening sliding doors, mobility vehicles, garage door openers, forklifts, dental chairs, and hospital beds.
The MLX83100 can simultaneously control four 500nC N-FETs at an operating voltage of up to 28V with minimal self-heating. The device can handle 45V load dump conditions in automotive applications. An integrated self-lifting function and charging pump allow it to operate with supply voltages as low as 4.5V, ensuring continuous operation under automotive crankshaft conditions. The device can therefore operate with 100% pulse-width modulation (PWM). Its built-in EEPROM memory provides end-of-line configurability, allowing the customer to configure the device according to their specific system design requirements. The MLX83100 also features a high-gain current shunt amplifier that delivers fast settling time with high accuracy. This makes these pre-drivers particularly suitable for applications requiring precise torque control, such as electric power steering.
The MLX83100 is fully approved for automotive use and has an operating temperature range of -40°C to +150°C. Comprehensive diagnostics are achieved via a single serial communication line, enabling differentiation between various types of errors. For example, all output voltages are monitored for potential faults. It also incorporates protection against battery undervoltage, overvoltage, and overtemperature of the input battery.
Along with the new MLX83100, Melexis now also supplies the MLX83203 brushless DC pre-driver IC with new TQFP48 or QFN32 wet-edge package options. The MLX83202 pre-driver, with a lower gate drive capacity than the MLX83203 for reduced EMC, is also available in these packages.

N-FET pre-driver with reduced pin count for high current DC motor applications in the automotive industry
Melexis introduces the MLX83100 pre-driver IC, adding to its catalog of brushless direct current (BLDC) pre-drivers that covers conventional DC motor applications. Supplied in a compact 28-pin package with four digital inputs, this pre-driver IC provides a highly flexible, cost-effective, and smaller-sized solution for high-current N-FET DC motors.
