In recent years, the need for safer, higher-density rechargeable batteries has led to the development of new battery types, including fully solid/semi-solid-state models that utilize innovative electrode materials and batteries with different terminal configurations. However, many of the latest rechargeable batteries are small and thin, requiring low-voltage charging in the 2V to 3V range. Furthermore, there are currently no battery charger integrated circuits that support a wide voltage range.

Based on this market demand, ROHM has developed a battery charger IC that supports low-voltage charging not only of lithium-ion batteries but also of newer types of rechargeable batteries, such as fully solid-state and semi-solid-state batteries. The BD71631QWZ achieves low-voltage charging over a wide range of 2.0 V to 4.7 V by improving the stability of the internal circuitry.

Unlike general battery charger ICs that provide a fixed voltage, ROHM's new product allows for easy adjustment of the charging voltage simply by changing the external resistor, thus reducing the design load when changing batteries. Furthermore, the original packaging technology enables a compact package only 0.4 mm thick, which is 60% thinner than conventional products on the market. This contributes to smaller and thinner devices. In addition, each charging characteristic, such as the charge/termination current, can be adjusted for CCCV charging, providing an optimal charging environment for thin and compact IoT devices and wearables using the latest rechargeable batteries.

In the future, ROHM will continue to contribute to providing greater application advantages by supplying more efficient charging solutions.
