Barometric pressure sensors have become popular in wearable devices and smartphones for indoor navigation and for acquiring altitude data in fitness trackers. In recent years, as applications have expanded, there has been a growing demand for smaller, waterproof barometric pressure sensors that are also robust and resistant to external disturbances.

In response, ROHM has developed a new compact, waterproof barometric pressure sensor that is resistant to temperature fluctuations and mechanical stress. The BM1390GLV combines previously used MEMS and control circuitry with original waterproof technology to deliver IPX8 waterproof performance in a compact 2.0 mm × 2.0 mm × 1.0 mm package. Furthermore, a patented built-in temperature compensation feature ensures superior temperature characteristics, while the ceramic package minimizes fluctuations in device-specific characteristics caused by mechanical stress during board mounting. These features enable highly accurate barometric pressure measurement in applications requiring waterproof performance—previously difficult to achieve—and in environments exposed to large temperature variations.

From now on, ROHM will continue to develop sensors that provide greater accuracy and reliability.
