With their compact size and flexible mounting options as side or top mounts, these sensors allow designers to save space in compact televisions, CCTV cameras, smartphones, PDAs, and GPS units, while also providing flexibility in sensor placement.
Vishay's VEML ambient light sensors combine a photodiode, a low-noise amplifier, and a 16-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) in a transparent, miniature surface-mount package. The sensors utilize Filtron™ technology, enabling spectral sensitivity to ambient light, while O-Trim™ sensor technology provides power tolerance of less than 10%. The sensors offer detection from 0 lux to 167 klux and resolution down to 0.005 lux/ct, allowing operation in applications with low-transmittance lens designs. The sensors provide 100 Hz and 120 Hz flicker noise rejection and excellent temperature compensation from -25 to +85 degrees Celsius. They offer low power consumption, as low as 2 µA in operating mode and 0.5 µA in off mode.
The VEML7700 sensor is available in a 6.8 x 3.0 x 2.35 mm clear surface-mount package. The VEML6030 sensor is housed in a tiny 2.0 x 2.0 x 0.85 mm package, allowing engineers to place it in space-constrained designs. These sensors are ideal for backlight dimming and optical switching in consumer products, as well as industrial lighting systems.
