These highly integrated devices reduce the number of components and the surface area of the printed circuit board needed for ultra-compact adapters for mobile phones, laptops, tablets, and multiport accessories.
"The InnoSwitch4-Pro ICs interface seamlessly with Power Integrations' ClampZero™ family of active clamp ICs to achieve Zero Variable Switching (ZVS) in both continuous conduction mode (CCM) and discontinuous conduction mode (DCM)," stated Aditya Kulkarni, director of product marketing at Power Integrations. "ZVS, combined with our PowiGaN™ technology, virtually eliminates switching losses. Efficiency exceeds 95 percent, allowing designers to eliminate the heat sinks, spacers, and packaging materials typically required for thermal management."
Further adapter size reduction can be achieved by using a MinE-CAP™ device in combination with the InnoSwitch4-Pro and ClampZero ICs. Also based on PowiGaN technology, the MinE-CAP ICs allow for an approximately 40 percent reduction in input capacitance size.
Delivering up to 220 W, the InnoSwitch4-Pro ICs combine a 750 V PowiGaN primary switch, a controller, a FluxLink™ reinforced isolation feedback link for secondary-side control, an I2C interface, active clamp drive, and synchronous rectification in a compact InSOP™-28 package. This high level of integration greatly simplifies the development and manufacturing of fully programmable, highly efficient power supplies. These programmable flyback ICs, in combination with the complementary ClampZero and MinE-CAP devices, enable the ultra-compact, slim form factors so desirable for OEM accessories and aftermarket USB PD and Universal Fast Charge Specification (UFCS) adapters. UFCS is the new standard published by the China Communications Standards Association.
The InnoSwitch4-Pro integrated circuits employ a unique control algorithm to enable quasi-resonant switching (ZVS) in both DCM and CCM modes. When combined with the ClampZero IC, this algorithm allows for higher frequency operation without a corresponding decrease in efficiency. The InnoSwitch4-Pro also supports quasi-resonant switching in both DCM and CCM modes when used as a standalone product. DCM-only operation can be selected to reduce stress on the SR FET. The new integrated circuits also feature an optimized command set to reduce I2C traffic.
The InnoSwitch4-Pro flyback switching integrated circuits provide exceptional CV/CC accuracy, independent of external components, and consume less than 30 mW no-load, while offering line sensing and comprehensive protection features. The devices are fully protected and feature automatic reset or latching fault response for output overvoltage and undervoltage protection, multiple output undervoltage fault thresholds, latching or hysterical primary overtemperature protection, and output bus switch short-circuit protection.
