The evolution of smart cities has rapidly moved from a futuristic vision to a tangible reality. As urban populations grow, cities are increasingly relying on advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), big data, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to create more efficient, sustainable, and resilient environments.
The Crucial Role of Edge AI
At the heart of this technological transformation is Edge AI, which plays a fundamental role in processing the enormous amounts of data generated in urban ecosystems. Unlike the traditional cloud-centralized AI model, Edge AI processes data locally on devices close to the source, reducing latency, minimizing bandwidth usage, and improving privacy.
Real-World Applications in Smart Cities -
Intelligent Traffic Management Edge AI enables real-time analysis of traffic patterns, signal timings, and road conditions. For example, using Aetina's NVIDIA Jetson Orin series, cities can optimize vehicle flow in congested urban areas, reducing vehicle density and emissions, and improving safety for both drivers and pedestrians. -
Intelligent Parking Systems With Edge AI, image and data processing occurs directly in the parking lot. This enables: - Instant recognition of available spaces. - Vehicle identification through Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR). - Real-time updates to parking availability applications.
This implementation significantly improves user experience and operational efficiency, reducing reliance on high-bandwidth networks and centralized servers. -
Advanced Public Safety Edge AI processes video feeds directly on-site, enabling: - Real-time detection of incidents such as unauthorized entry. - Identification of suspicious activity. - Instant alerts to security teams for a faster and more effective response. Furthermore, by processing data locally, sensitive information is kept within a secure perimeter, reducing the risk of intrusions and data breaches. -
Real-Time Environmental Monitoring Using devices like the Jetson Orin Nano, cities can deploy environmental monitoring stations that process data from: - Air quality sensors. - Weather stations. - Noise monitors.
Local data processing reduces the need for constant transmission to central servers, conserving bandwidth and enabling faster responses to changes in environmental conditions.

Benefits of Edge AI in Smart Cities
Implementing Edge AI solutions offers numerous advantages:
- Real-time decision-making: Crucial for applications such as traffic management and public safety. - Enhanced privacy: Sensitive data is processed locally, reducing security risks. - Operational efficiency: Reduces the load on centralized data processing infrastructure. - Resilience: Applications can function even with limited network connectivity. - Sustainability: Optimizes the use of urban resources, contributing to greener cities.
In this way, Aetina's Edge AI is transforming how cities manage and process data, enabling more efficient, secure, and sustainable solutions. As cities continue to evolve and adopt smarter technologies, the role of Edge AI will become even more prominent, providing the foundation for a new era of urban innovation.

Gate controllers require precise voltages for maximum system efficiency and reliability. A new range of isolated power modules from RECOM offers a cost-effective, high-performance solution in a tiny 36-pin SMD SSOP package, measuring only 12.83 x 7.5 x 3.55 mm. The isolated modules have multiple input ranges, covering 8.5V to 27VDC for 12V, 15V, and 24VDC ratings with power ratings up to 2.5W, depending on the selected variant and temperature range.
Vicor has introduced three automotive power modules designed for 48V electric vehicle (EV) systems. The BCM6135, DCM3735, and PRM3735 models utilize integrated circuits designed by Vicor, are AEC-Q100 certified, and have completed the PPAP process with automotive customers.
The BCM6135 is a 2.5kW BCM® bus converter with 98% efficiency that converts 800V from the traction battery to 48V to provide a safety extra-low voltage (SELV) power supply to the vehicle. The BCM6135 internally provides isolation between the high and low voltage, resulting in a significant reduction in the space required for DC/DC conversion. Its power density of 158kW/l allows EV system designers to reduce the size of the primary DC/DC converter and the vehicle's weight. The BCM6135's fast transient response of 8 mA/s enables it to replace a 48V battery weighing over 11 kg, serving as the 48V battery in the xVE, thus saving both cost and weight.
The DCM™ DCM3735 2.0kW DC/DC converter transforms an unregulated 48V input into a regulated 12V output. The DCM3735 has a wide input range, making it compatible with various automotive applications because the output can be adjusted from 8 to 16V. With a power density of 300kW/l, the DCM3735 is an attractive option for architectures that distribute 48V to 12V subsystems in applications with zonal electronic control units (ECUs).
The PRM3735 is a 2.5kW PRM™ regulator for 48V power with 99.2% efficiency. Its small size and 260kW/l power density free up space in the package, reducing the overall size of the DC/DC power supply. It is ideal for 48V regulated loads installed in new vehicle architectures.
Vicor's new modules, which can be installed in over 300 configurations, offer exceptional flexibility and scalability to facilitate innovation across various vehicle subsystems. Furthermore, as the market transitions from 12V to 48V zonal architecture, these products are highly efficient at converting to and from 48V. The three modules can be easily configured in arrays to increase power supply levels and automatically share power to optimize performance within each array.
