The MAXREFDES82 reference design features a next-generation industrial intelligent force sensor that helps designers quickly evaluate and implement new human-machine interface (HMI) devices. The design measures masses up to 780 g, as well as the object's center of mass, allowing it to function both as a scale and as a force-sensing contact interface for industrial instrumentation and control.
The Maxim MAXREFDES82 intelligent force sensor reference design, available from Mouser Electronics, provides both downward force and center of mass measurements by collecting responses from four load cells using the Maxim MAX11254 6-channel, 24-bit ADC converter. This highly integrated ADC works with the load cells to provide two- and three-dimensional information about the objects being sensored. The system includes a 3.5-inch TFT LCD module that digitally displays the forces on each load cell and the total force applied to the top plate. The LCD module also displays the force magnitude and the coordinates of the center of force. The design incorporates a 32-bit STMicroelectronics STM32F4 microcontroller with an ARM® Cortex®-M4 core to control the ADC module and LCD.
The MAXREFDES82 reference design consumes less than 50 mA during normal operation and is powered by a USB port. A GUI interface is also included on the PC side to facilitate demonstration and development of the human user interface. The design includes source files for the microcontroller to allow developers to quickly evaluate and customize the design for their specific applications with minimal firmware or hardware changes.
