Melexis sensor for laser-powered headlights
In response to the emergence of laser-powered automotive headlight systems, Melexis has optimized its MLX75305 series of advanced light sensor ICs.
Each MLX75305 incorporates a transimpedance photodiode amplifier and an output stage. Unlike competing devices on the market, it is fully AEC-Q100 qualified and supports an operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C. Supplied in a compact SOIC8 package, the MLX75305 provides engineers with a simple single-chip solution for accurately monitoring headlight output, requiring minimal external components and occupying very little board space. Covering a spectral bandwidth of 500nm to 1000nm, the IC maintains ±2% linearity across its entire output voltage range with a typical slew rate of 70mV/(µW/cm²).
Laser-based headlights are set to be deployed in a growing number of high-end vehicles in the near future. This technology will provide substantial increases in illumination, enabling long-range vision while simultaneously reducing energy consumption. Powered headlights offer automakers a way to improve road user safety without compromising fuel efficiency. The increased luminous flux also allows for smaller headlights, enhancing the vehicle's aesthetics and aerodynamics.
“The MLX75305 can meet the demanding requirements of next-generation laser front lighting applications, providing a highly cost-effective, streamlined monitoring solution capable of withstanding harsh environments where exposure to extreme heat and electrostatic discharges is common,” says Gualtiero Bagnuoli, Optical Sensor Marketing Manager at Melexis. “Our engineering teams are now working with major automotive brands and their system integration partners to develop monitoring systems that incorporate this IC.”
