ABB is collaborating with artificial intelligence companies and data center operators to design a new class of electrical infrastructure for data centers using integrated end-to-end power systems, designed to deliver flexibility, reliability, efficiency and scalable performance at the scale of artificial intelligence.
Data centers will leverage the microgrid-ready architecture of the 34.5 kV HiPerGuard to combine distributed power generation with battery energy storage. The system supports diverse energy sources—gas turbines, renewable generation, and grid connection—and provides operators with the flexibility to optimize resilience and efficiency. Integration with ABB's Power Exchanger technology enables battery management and grid support functions, allowing data center operators to provide peak demand shaving and frequency regulation services.
With 98% efficiency, HiPerGuard's direct 34.5 kV connection reduces voltage conversion losses, resulting in savings of approximately $880,000 per year for every percentage point increase in efficiency in a 100 MW AI data center. The simplified architecture also significantly reduces copper cabling requirements. Furthermore, with a 20-25% smaller footprint and fewer devices and cable runs, operators gain space and achieve significant infrastructure cost savings.

The system’s repeatable and flexible architecture allows for incremental capacity expansion through parallel configurations of up to 25 MW, enabling operators to grow without requiring complete infrastructure overhauls. As AI workloads increase and power requirements change, the system’s plug-and-play converter design allows for rapid adaptation and integration of emerging technologies.
HiPerGuard has been recognized by UL Solutions as the first product of its kind to meet UL 9540, the industry's most demanding energy storage standard. The HiPerGuard range is IEC and UL certified (UL 1741 and UL 9540) and supports voltage levels from 4.16 kV to 34.5 kV.
