The TC78S122FNG will help designers save space, reduce power consumption, lower heat dissipation, and minimize vibration and acoustic noise in high-speed motion control designs. Target applications include surveillance cameras, ATMs, office automation equipment, factory automation, and household appliances.
The TC78S122FNG is a two-in-one chip that offers 2-channel control functionality, capable of running two stepper motors simultaneously. Integrating functions onto a single chip frees up valuable board space, helping to reduce device size. Heat generated by the IC itself was one of the reasons conventional drivers could not achieve continuous operation in applications requiring control currents in the 2.0 A range. However, the TC78S122FNG can simultaneously control two channels thanks to a low maximum active resistance of 0.6 Ω (a 50% reduction compared to previous products), which reduces heat generation.
In previous products, the regulator circuit for the IC's internal logic operated in standby mode. The new product can stop the regulator in standby mode due to the addition of a "sleep" function. Consequently, the IC's power consumption is reduced. Furthermore, the TC78S122FNG not only controls stepper motors but also provides an interface for driving DC brushed motors. For example, this could include one channel for the stepper motor and two channels for operating DC brushed motors.
To provide reduced noise and vibration, the TC78S122FNG offers high-resolution motor control in 1/4 step increments (max.) and a scaling mode function for constant current control. Built-in fault detection features include a thermal shutdown circuit and an overcurrent disconnect circuit to provide greater reliability and safety.
Currently in a compact HTSSOP package (measuring 12.5 mm x 8.1 mm x 1.2 mm), Toshiba plans to introduce another version of the TC78S122FNG in an even smaller QFN package type.
