These new flyback constant current/constant voltage offline switching ICs incorporate a constant power output profile that, when combined with an adaptive voltage protocol such as USB-PD, helps smart device designers achieve faster charging times, improved charging efficiency, and compatibility with the popular USB BC 1.2 5V specification, while minimizing overall thermal management and battery charging system cost.

The InnoSwitch-CP switching ICs from Power Integrations, available from Mouser Electronics in two models—the 15W output INN2214K and the 20W output INN2215K—both incorporate a flyback driver, 650V MOSFET, secondary-side sensing, and synchronous rectification driver to provide extremely high efficiency across the entire range at full load. The ICs utilize Power Integrations' FluxLink™ technology, which enables high-performance secondary-side control to be implemented with the simplicity and low component count typically associated with primary-side regulation. FluxLink allows feedback information to be delivered through an isolation barrier without the use of magnetic materials and offers very high communication bandwidth, enabling a much faster transient load response. Furthermore, the minimal bias requirements of the integrated communication connection allow the system to achieve this at less than 10 mW (no load).

The InnoSwitch-CP IC family dramatically simplifies the development and manufacturing of low-voltage, high-current power supplies, especially in compact enclosures or with high-efficiency requirements. These integrated circuits incorporate a comprehensive suite of advanced protection features, including surge protection, output overcurrent protection with 3V auto-reset, hysteresis thermal shutdown, and input line surge protection with precise brown-in/brown-out thresholds. The RoHS-compliant ICs are fully compliant with safety and regulatory standards, including 100% compliant testing for dielectric strength (hi-pot) output equivalent to 6 kV DC/1 sec, reinforced insulation, and insulation voltage testing above 3,500 VAC.
