The highly integrated transceiver allows designers to achieve ease of design, high efficiency, and robust communication up to 500 kbits per second for industrial automation applications.
The Maxim MAX14949 RS-485/RS-422 half-duplex transceiver, available from Mouser Electronics, includes an integrated 450 kHz transformer driver for power transfer (up to 80 percent efficiency at 150 mA) to the cable side of the transceiver, which uses an external transformer. The device also incorporates a low-dropout regulator (LDO), providing a simple and efficient architecture for supplying power to the cable side of the IC. The device features a half-duplex driver/receiver channel with a low impedance of only 1/8 load unit, allowing for up to 256 transceivers on a common bus.
The integrated fail-safe circuitry ensures a "logic-high" output at the receiver when the inputs are shorted or open, while undervoltage protection disables the controller when either the cable or UART side of the power supplies falls below operating levels. The controller outputs/receiver inputs are protected against electrostatic discharge (ESD) of ±30kV to GNDB on the cable side.
The MAX14949 is available in a 16-pin SOIC wide package and operates in a temperature range of -40 to 85°C. The transceiver is ideal for industrial automation, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), HVAC, and power meter applications.
