It incorporates a sophisticated microcontroller and a MEMS-based pressure sensor, as well as an efficient 315/433MHz wireless power transmitter (supporting data rates up to 150kbits/s) and a 125kHz receiver for communication with the vehicle's corresponding electronic control unit (ECU). It includes 16kB of embedded program memory for storing custom application data/libraries. Furthermore, it incorporates a high-gain accelerometer with single or dual axes, compatible with all commercially available tire self-location sensor functionalities.

The combination of minimal size and high degree of integration offered by the MLX91804 means a significant reduction in PCB size can be achieved. Similarly, the device's low power consumption (in standby mode as well as when fully operational) allows for a reduction in the specified battery size. All of this results in a smaller and lighter sensor module. Along with the high-range accelerometer and fast data acquisition, it also represents a step closer to the tire-mounted sensor (TMS) implementations that Tier 1 automotive suppliers are seeking for future use. Best-in-class accuracy and fast, low-power pressure measurements enable the implementation of new features such as a tire inflation assistant without a noticeable impact on battery life. The operating temperature range of -40°C to 125°C and robust shock resistance (10,000 g) allow the MLX91804 to withstand harsh tire conditions.
