The exclusivity of this offering is evident in the fact that the MLX92292 latch/switch is the only one to meet ASIL B safety integrity level (according to ISO 26262), with various built-in diagnostic mechanisms.
OEM customers can choose from pre-programmed models or take advantage of end-of-line (EoL) programming capabilities. This allows each device to be configured (via its output pin) during the OEM production process, thus achieving total system optimization. The programming function also allows adjustment of both magnetic operating points in small increments within a range of -90mT to +90mT.
Supplied in 3-pin TSOT or TO92 packages, the MLX92292 features an operating voltage range of 3.3V to 18V and extremely low power consumption (typically only 7µA), making it ideal for battery-powered applications. These features will prove their advantages under circumstances where the vehicle's engine cannot be started, as they do not consume significant battery resources. Since the sleep time is a programmable parameter, energy consumption can be adjusted to meet specific customer needs. Target applications include brake lights, steering sensors, handbrake mechanisms, and more.
The MLX92292 is available with standard orthogonal or lateral sensing. Lateral sensing allows multiple devices to be replaced by a single surface-mount device, saving valuable board space and reducing bill of materials costs. This is a direct result of Integrated Magnetic Concentrator (IMC™), Melexis' proprietary technology that provides a substantial increase in the signal-to-noise ratio when measuring magnetic fields. Furthermore, the lateral sensing capability of this technology enables the implementation of lower-profile systems, as the magnet can be positioned alongside the device rather than above it.
To protect the MLX92292, it features reverse voltage, thermal, electrostatic discharge (ESD), and overvoltage protection, as well as undervoltage lockout functions. With its ability to handle a 40V load dump, it can be connected directly to the vehicle's battery, something impossible for other Hall-effect switch/latch solutions. To achieve ASIL B compliance, numerous diagnostic/monitoring functions have been incorporated, including sensor element diagnostics and internal voltage references. The device comprises a full suite of programmable warning functions, ensuring compatibility with any existing electronic control unit (ECU) interface. Only the pins required for standard application are needed, eliminating the need for external diagnostic pins and significantly simplifying the design concept.
