One of the new devices, the MAX22192, is integrated into the reference design of the company's Go-IO programmable logic controller (PLC), also announced today.
As manufacturing becomes increasingly automated, there is a growing need for real-time feedback and decision-making mechanisms. These intelligent Industry 4.0 systems require integrated digital input circuits within PLCs to receive on/off status signals. However, to facilitate integration into manufacturing environments, the devices must be robust, high-performance, and compact.
Maxim's broad portfolio of IEC61131-2 compliant digital input devices offers the industry's smallest solution size (up to 50% reduction), the lowest power dissipation (up to 60% reduction), is up to 6 times faster, and has the most robust operation (integrating 1kV surge protection and built-in diagnostics). Furthermore, the family also includes a parasitic-powered digital input that reduces power dissipation by up to 60 percent and does not require a discrete, isolated power supply.
The latest digital input devices include:
• MAX22190 8-channel octal digital input with Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI), precise input current limiters, built-in surge protection of >1kV, and broken connection detection in a 5mm x 5mm package
• MAX22191 single-channel digital input with parasitic feed, precise input current limiters, and a propagation delay of 250 ns (max) in a 2.8mm x 2.9mm package
• MAX22192 8-channel octal digital input with isolated SPI, broken connection detection, and precise input current limiters in a 6mm x 10mm package
• MAX22195 high-speed octal digital input with parallel output, precise input current limiters, 300 ns (max) propagation delay, parallel interface, low power consumption, low heat dissipation, and fault tolerance with built-in diagnostics, configurability and a robust design in a 5 mm x 5 mm 32-TQFN package
These products enhance a family of digital I/O that also includes the octal high-speed controllers, push-pull switches/drivers. The MAX14912 and MAX14913 feature integrated overload protection, diagnostics, and fast, safe degaussing; the MAX14914 is a universal digital I/O with surge protection, a high-branch switch/push-pull driver/digital input, and an SPI interface; and the MAX14483 is a high-density, high-speed, 6-channel, low-power digital isolator optimized for daisy-chained SPI applications.
Key Advantages
• Smaller Solution Size: Adds robust functionality to the PLC in a footprint 50% smaller than comparable solutions, empowering adaptive manufacturing.
• Reduced Power Dissipation: A parasitically powered digital input reduces power dissipation by up to 60% and does not require a discrete, isolated power supply.
• More Robust Operation: All components in the family have onboard diagnostics, while individual components offer performance-enhancing features including:
◦ Built-in >1 kV surge protection for increased system robustness and elimination of eight external transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diodes.
◦ Extensive diagnostics, such as open connection and break-connect detection, to increase uptime on the factory floor.
• High Speed:
◦ Digital inputs 6 times faster than industry alternatives.
