The integrated circuits implement the Maxim ModelGauge M5 algorithm without requiring host interaction for configuration, making them ideal charge indicators in battery packs for smartphones, tablets, wearable medical devices, e-readers, and other handheld devices. As wearable devices become thinner, batteries are getting smaller and their capacity is increasing. These highly accurate battery charge indicator ICs monitor battery usage to ensure efficient use of available power, thus extending battery life.
The Maxim MAX1720x and MAX1721x ModelGauge M5 battery charge indicators, available from Mouser Electronics, determine the amount of charge remaining in the battery and how long the battery can continue providing usable power under the current load. The ModelGauge M5 algorithm combines short-term accuracy and linearity, long-term stability, and temperature compensation to provide industry-leading charge indicator accuracy. The integrated circuits automatically compensate for cell aging, temperature, and discharge rate, and provide the exact state of charge (SOC) in milliampere-hours (mAh) or percentage across a wide range of operating conditions. As the battery approaches the critical empty region, the ModelGauge M5 algorithm applies a special error correction mechanism that eliminates any errors.
The MAX17201 and MAX17211 integrated circuits are designed to monitor a single-cell pack while consuming only 18 μA in active mode. The MAX17205 and MAX17215 ICs can monitor single cells, three-cell (3S) packs, two-cell (2S) packs, or the entire stack voltage of any number of cells in multiple series, with an active-mode consumption of only 25 μA. The ICs are available in a 14-pin, 3 mm x 3 mm lead-free TDFN package and are compatible with fully assembled and tested evaluation kits.
