In mobility applications, directional feedback combined with linear speed, rotational speed, or angular position detection is fundamental to the basic operation and safety of countless systems. This information is used in passenger vehicles to control and limit the operation of motorized systems such as power windows, seat motors, and power tailgates. In electric bicycles, it is used to detect cadence and activate electric pedal assist. Motor feedback also plays a crucial role in ensuring safe and precise movement, both in industry and in our homes, in applications such as smart blinds and ventilation systems.

Currently, engineers using a dual-locking solution for stepper or DC motor applications rely on integrating either two discrete solutions or a single step-dependent solution. In both cases, designs are hampered by further development, complex and highly specific magnet designs, and increased costs. The MLX92253 stands out by featuring two Hall plates, one on the Z-axis and one on the X-axis, with two independent signal traces. It also has a common magnetic center, which ensures a constant 90° phase shift (quadrature) between the two speed outputs, regardless of the magnet pole pitch. Furthermore, the MLX92253 features a low and narrow magnetic threshold, allowing for the use of smaller, more affordable magnets or a larger air gap for easier mounting. This functionality provides engineers with greater flexibility in their magnetic design and allows for easier reuse of the design across multiple products.

In operation, the MLX92253 offers fast and accurate feedback with low latency, low jitter, and greater reliability than traditional solutions. It features a 500 kHz cutoff frequency, an operating voltage range of 2.7 V to 5.5 V to suit low-power embedded designs, a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to 150°C, and output state feedback during startup. The startup feedback function can be used to convert both outputs into inputs during startup. This allows a microcontroller to recover the MLX92253's previous state before shutdown, ensuring that no movement is lost.

“The MLX92253 sets a new standard for affordable DC motors and encoders,” says Minko Daskalov, product line manager at Melexis. “It reduces development, production, and material costs while supporting a wide range of applications that contribute to global sustainability.”.

The MLX92253 is now available in a compact TSOT23 package. It is also available upon request as engineering samples in a VA package.
