This development facilitates the transition for system developers to the use of IEEE 802.3bt-2018 compliant PoE injectors and midspans, as well as PSE (Power Sourcing Equipment) power circuit kits.

As the industry adopts the latest generation of PoE technology to manage data and power over a single Ethernet cable, users face the challenge of getting pre-standardized PDs to work with new IEEE 802.3bt-2018 compliant PDs without changing PoE switches or cabling.

In 2018, numerous proprietary solutions and specifications, such as Universal PoE (UPOE) and Power over HDBaseT (PoH), entered the market. These address the growing need for powering two-pair and four-pair PDs, including kiosks, point-of-sale terminals, thin clients, 802.11ac/ax access points, small cells, smart buildings, industrial automation systems, and connected LED lighting. During this period, Microchip offered a PSE circuit set to implement the widely adopted four-pair PoH power standard for 95W PDs. Now, it is the first to supply an IEEE 802.3af/at/bt circuit set that enables pre-standardized switches to operate with new IEEE 802.3bt-2018 compliant products. Its comprehensive IEEE 802.3bt-compliant portfolio comprises a variety of products.

PoE Injectors and Midspans:
• Users can power any combination of pre-standardized, IEEE 802.3bt-2018 compliant PDs by installing single-port or multi-port solutions between the PDs and their existing switch.
• The family consists of single-port and multi-port models that will also allow powering pre-standardized PDs with new IEEE 802.3bt compliant switches.

Compatible PSE and PD Circuit Sets:
• The unique PSE circuit set design provides more balanced heat dissipation across the system and supports two- and four-pair systems with a single board. It delivers all the necessary management and control functions for power supply development with the highest interoperability on the market and can supply 90 to 99.9 W per port with support for up to 48 ports for IEEE 802.3bt Type 3 (Classes 1-6) and Type 4 (Classes 7-8) applications.
• Previous pre-standardized PSE designs based on Microchip's Gen 6 PSE circuit set can be retrofitted to IEEE 802.3bt via a software update without hardware changes.
• The IdealBridge™ two-package MOSFET-based full-bridge rectifier device is used in the powered section of the PoE connection and protects PDs against reverse polarity connections, reducing power consumption, space, and costs associated with IEEE 802.3bt Type 4 Class 8 power.

Microchip's IEEE 802.3bt-2018 compliant PSE circuit kit is available in bulk, including the PD69208M, PD69204T4, and PD69208T4 PSE managers, and the PD69210 PoE controller. The PD70224 IdealBridge dual-MOSFET bridge rectifier is also available. Evaluation boards, design application notes, firmware, GUI software, and communication protocol are available for download. Injectors and midspans will be available in November 2019.
