The SAM R30 module, based on IEEE 802.15.4, supports proprietary networks that can be easily customized and configured. This is ideal for applications where interoperability is undesirable due to inherent vulnerability to remote attacks, such as alarm systems, building automation, smart cities, and industrial sensor networks. A key advantage of an IEEE 802.15.4-based network is that devices can remain in standby mode for extended periods and still be part of the network. The SAM R30 module incorporates very low-power modes and can be activated from GPIO (General-Purpose Input/Output) or its real-time clock (RTC) with an approximate current consumption of 800 nA. Devices can remain in standby mode for years and are only activated when data transmission is required.
Compact sensor designs can significantly reduce the number of components and simplify device installation. Applications often rely on a single double-sided tape for mounting, thus prioritizing sensor size reduction. The SAM R30 module measures just 12.7 x 11 mm and includes the necessary functions to remotely control any connected sensor, eliminating the need for a separate microcontroller in the design.
The design also offers up to 256 kilobytes (KB) of Flash and 40 KB of RAM, as well as serial, USB, and digital and analog I/O interfaces for advanced sensor development.
Operating in the sub-GHz RF spectrum, the SAM R30 module doubles the range and improves propagation through walls and floors compared to similarly powerful devices using the 2.4 GHz frequency band. This robustness is critical in applications such as leak detection, where the sensor may be installed deep within a remote cabinet, or for pool and spa controllers, which require reliable sub-GHz solutions that can communicate through exterior walls.
The SAM R30 module is certified by the FCC (Federal Communications Commission), IC (Industry Canada), and RED (Radio Equipment Directive), enabling designers to shorten time to market and reduce RF testing certification costs. Microchip provides developers with the flexibility to implement proprietary point-to-point mesh, star, or self-healing network configurations using the free MiWi™ protocol stack.
The SAM R30 module joins Microchip's IEEE 802.15.4 wireless networking portfolio. With devices that meet the unique needs of diverse applications, developers can select a 32-pin or 48-pin single-chip SAM R30 SiP (System-in-Package) for flexible design layout or the certified SAM R30 module for faster time to market.
Developers can begin prototyping with the ATSAMR30M-XPRO Extension development board, which is compatible with the Atmel ICE debugger/programmer (ATMEL-ICE) and the Atmel Studio 7 integrated development environment. It includes sample code samples compatible with every network configuration. The SAM R30 module (ATSAMR30M18) is available now. The ATSAMR30M-XPRO Extension development board (AC164159) is also available and is priced at $38 per unit.

Microchip SAM R30 certified sub-GHZ module
Microchip announces the smallest IEEE 802.15.4 compliant module on the market, combining an ultra-low-power microcontroller and a sub-GHz radio to accelerate time to market and provide long battery life for wireless network sensors. At half the size of the smallest module on the market, the SAM R30 module meets the needs of space-constrained designs, such as sensors and controls for home automation.
