Available in capacities from 16 to 256 GB, the EM-30 offers significant cost savings compared to previous 2D-NAND solutions. Potential applications range from embedded systems, POS/POI terminals, factory automation, routers, and switches to Internet of Things (IoT) solutions and healthcare systems.
The EM-30 product series complies with the e.MMC-5.1 specification and is fully backward compatible. Thanks to established standards, integration is straightforward. With a temperature range of -40 to +85°C, the product family is ideal for critical embedded applications. Offering sequential data rates of up to 300 MB/s for read and 230 MB/s for write, as well as 39K IOPS and 41K IOPS for random read and write access, the EM-30 delivers the performance of SATA SSDs but with significantly smaller size requirements and lower costs.
Like large SSDs, the EM-30's firmware supports automatic background data updates in read-only areas, such as those created by boot media. This feature, along with robust error correction, ensures highly reliable data availability, even after prolonged periods of inactivity or exposure to high temperatures.
Another key feature is enhanced protection against data corruption in the event of a sudden power loss, which occurs not only in regions with unstable power supplies but also, typically, when handling medical devices or embedded systems.
Future-proof solution
"The new e.MMC series is positioned to meet the growing demands of embedded systems and their new chipsets, which typically require ultra-small, vibration-proof form factors with ever-increasing data storage capacities. Long-life monitoring support, combined with the possibility of lossless, field-based firmware upgrades and the typical Swissbit longevity, make the new EM-30 series a future-proof solution for our customers," explains Roger Griesemer, Managing Director of Memory Solutions at Swissbit AG.
The BGA component comes in an 11.5x13mm case, with 153 balls and a 0.5mm pitch, or optionally in a 100-ball BGA with a 1mm pitch. For soldered components, it is important to know the expected lifespan under real-world conditions. EM-30 devices offer the option of accessing detailed information about write cycle consumption and internal resources through standard access to the e.MMC registers without requiring special access methods or drivers. This feature goes far beyond the e.MMC standard and enables reliable lifespan prediction in the field.
EM-30 devices can be user-split into multiple TLC and pSLC segments (for increased reliability) to optimally separate read-only areas from frequently written partitions. For maximum NAND endurance, Swissbit offers an EM-36 variant pre-configured with 100% pSLC. These models are available in capacities from 5 to 80 GB.
