SynRM's ultra-premium IE5-class motors offer up to 50 percent less energy loss and reduce energy consumption compared to the more common IE2 induction motors. ABB first introduced SynRM technology in 2011, and case studies conducted in industrial installations have demonstrated energy savings of up to 25 percent, depending on the application.
The IE5 efficiency level is made possible by the SynRM design, which combines the performance advantages of permanent magnet technology with the ease of maintenance of an induction platform. To ensure an environmentally friendly design, the permanent magnets do not contain rare-earth materials.
Another advantage of the SynRM IE5 motor is reduced bearing and winding temperatures. This design also results in quieter operation, a welcome feature in the workplace.
ABB SynRM IE5 motors can be used in a wide range of industrial applications, from standard induction motors in pumps, fans, and compressors to more demanding applications such as extruders, mixers, winches, and conveyor belts. SynRM IE5 motors replace induction motors because they have the same size and power output, requiring no mechanical modifications.
SynRM IE5 motors meet the efficiency class requirements defined in IEC TS 60034-30-2 and are available with power outputs from 5.5 to 315 kilowatts (kW) in IEC 132-315 frame sizes. They can be specified as part of a high-efficiency motor and converter assembly with ABB frequency converters.
