This sensor can be directly implemented in extreme environments where conventional electronic encoders have clear limitationsThis innovative product measures absolute angular position from 0 to 360 degrees with a 13-bit resolution (8192 counts) at speeds exceeding 2500 rpm. Multiple rotations can be tracked at up to 12 bits (4096 revolutions).
“The unique feature of this system is that the sensor is entirely passive, meaning there are no electronic components of any kind in the unit,” explains Robert Rickenbach, Chief Engineer at Micronor. “As a result, the sensor can be deployed directly in extreme environments where conventional electronic encoders have clear limitations.”.
The new sensor uses a novel optical technique incorporating a passive sensor and an active controller connected by a duplex fiber optic link. The controller transmits a light pulse to the code disk located in the sensor, which modulates the spectral components of the light based on the angular position. The position information is imprinted on the optical spectrum of the light and guided back to the controller to obtain a highly accurate position reading.
The MR330's accuracy and EMI immunity make it ideal for applications requiring precise motion control and position measurement in demanding environments: oil platforms, satellite dishes, solar arrays, trigger systems, conveyor systems, steel foundries, and medical instrumentation. This "simple device" meets ATEX requirements for use in mines and other explosive atmospheres. The sensor's lightning immunity makes it particularly useful for outdoor applications, such as wind turbines and antennas.
The complete system consists of the MR332 passive sensor and the SSI MR330-1 controller, interconnected via 62.5/125 duplex multimode optical cables in compliance with industry standards. The controller is powered by 24 VDC and features multiple built-in interfaces and protocols, ensuring compatibility with most motion systems.
