sensorefectohallmlxpr22The MLX91209CA's excellent thermal stability and long operating life offer design engineers fully programmable features, allowing a single device to cover a wide range of current sensing applications. Parameters such as sensitivity and offset are stored in an internal EEPROM. Calibration is performed using Melexis's well-established PTC (Programming Through Connector) protocol. This modulates the supply voltage and does not require a separate pin for programming, enabling more efficient production workflows. A linear analog output allows the sensor to be used in applications requiring a high-speed response of 3 µs.

Custom calibration is best performed on-site after the sensor has been aligned with the current conductor and ferromagnetic core, achieving calibrated current sensitivity. The typical accuracy of a current sensing system based on the MLX91209 is better than ±0.5% at room temperature or ±2% over the entire temperature range (-40°C to 125°C) when end-of-line calibration is applied in the circuit. The device is supplied in a lead-free, RoHS-compliant, 4-pin SIP package.

Key applications:
The demand for current sensing solutions is rapidly increasing due to the growing proliferation of alternative vehicles, such as hybrid electric, electric, and mild hybrid vehicles equipped with start/stop systems. Battery management systems rely on accurate and stable current sensing to control charge/discharge cycles. Proper management of the current entering and leaving modern batteries is critical for safety, battery life, and, in fully electric vehicles, predictable range calculation.

The ongoing investments in solar power generation and other grid-connected energy sources demand accurate and stable monitoring for safe operation within the rapidly expanding “smart grid.” In this context, current sensing is also critical in control systems for the effective integration of mid-sized power management systems.

Current sensing is also paramount for power management in more traditional electronic systems. Distributed power systems in large server installations rely on current sensing to provide high levels of uptime and predictive maintenance.
