Renesas views AGL as an essential step in expanding the software developer base. The Renesas R-Car Starter Kit and AGL-based software are accelerating the development of in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) applications and bringing automakers closer to realizing connected cars. Renesas is a platinum member of the AGL Collaborative Project, and automakers such as Toyota Motor Corporation are participating to promote open-source software development. By supporting these activities, Renesas anticipates that more system manufacturers will be able to easily develop automotive applications, even for developers unfamiliar with embedded application software development, thus helping to accelerate IVI deployments.
The first Renesas R-Car SoC incorporating AGL platform-based software has begun volume shipments for Toyota's new 2018 Camry, which is scheduled to launch later this summer in the United States and will be the first Toyota model to run Automotive Grade Linux (AGL) in its infotainment system.
